Rainy

We had a big rain storm today in ”Sunny” San Diego. By big I mean it really poured all day long with few breaks in-between downpours. The average rain fall today was over 1.5-inches. I'm glad I had the day off of work so I didn't have to drive to work. Most people can't drive very well when it's nice and sunny out. Here in San Diego, the roads get really bad when it rains. People don't realize they can't drive as fast with wet roads. Here's how bad it gets. On a normal day, San Diego has about 50-70 accidents county wide. Today there was 240 traffic accidents which is about 4 times as many. There's a bigger storm forecasted for this Friday. I guess we can expect more accidents, especially during Friday night rush hour traffic.

Children of Men

Nicole and I went to the movies yesterday afternoon. It was a nice way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon after lounging around all morning. We saw the movie Children of Men. I personally thought it was a great movie. Here's a nice synopsis of the movie's plot:

Set in 2027, when no child has been born for 18 years and science is at loss to explain the reason, African and East European societies collapse and their dwindling populations migrate to England and other wealthy nations. In a climate of nationalistic violence, a London peace activist turned bureaucrat Theo Faron, joins forces with his revolutionary ex-wife Julian in order to save mankind by protecting a woman who has mysteriously became pregnant.

I really enjoyed the dialogue. It felt really natural and the movie avoided long drawn out speeches. Also the technology in the movie was believable. There wasn't any fancy tech like flying cars or computers plugged into people's brains. It was mostly technology that is in the prototype stages today like electronic paper that is flexible and Heads-Up Displays on a car's windshield. Too many movies that take place in the future have outlandish technology that is there just because the movie is in the future.

The concept of the movie is great and it makes think you think what the world would be like if there were no children. Seeing things like an abandoned school really helps you visualize the world without children better. I think this will be a movie that gets added to the DVD collection. If you haven't seen it you might have to wait for the DVD in March
